Dominant messages about adoption tend to privilege the hopes of adoptive parents instead of the lived experience of adoptees. Many adoptees feel alone in their grief, anger and confusion, often burying their feelings for years. Family and societal pressure to adapt and conform can lead to life-long challenges with mental health, self-esteem, identity and relationships.
